What is Root canal treatment ?

Dr. Nandana’s Dental Clinic

The procedure entails removal of the pulp tissue from within the tooth, disinfecting the canal occupied by the pulp followed by sealing this canal with a moisture proof filling material . The entire procedure takes about an hour and is performed under a local anaesthetic. This tooth then becomes a part of the patient for a lifetime after being protected with a crown.

By referring you to a specialist Endodontist, your family dentist is demonstrating a personal concern for the quality of your dental care.

Why Choose an Endodontist?

Endodontists are dentists with at least two additional years of advanced specialty education in diagnosis and root canal treatment. They use their special training and experience in treating difficult cases, such as teeth with narrow or blocked canals, or unusual anatomy. Endodontists may use advanced technology, such as operating microscopes, ultrasonics and digital imaging, to perform these special services. The training, tools and techniques of endodontists have advanced a lot in recent years. Today, getting root canal treatment is often no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Read about one patient’s experience with a root canal specialist and how the endodontist’s calm, caring manner put him at ease.

The new term ‘Root canal Systems” indicates the presence of multiple canals that interconnect and bifurcate with curvatures, multiple portals of exit, accessory canals, isthmuses and deltas. In the last decade, micro – CT has gained increasing significance in the detailed 3D study of canal anatomy in Endodontics. With the advent of micro – CT, it has been established that root canals are not “just canals” but “systems”.

Repeat Root canal treatment :

If your earlier root canal treated has developed an infection or is hurting again , an Endodontist is trained to repeat that root canal treatment and save that tooth . Today it has been proved that the success rates of root canal treated teeth is more than 95%
YOUR TOOTH IS WORTH SAVING !

Post and Core buildups

Teeth that are condemned and recommended fo extraction should be considered for conservative management with a combination of Endodontics and a “post and core” buildup.

Successfully saving such teeth and fitting them into an appropriate complicated treatment plan gives the patient the benefit of saving his natural tooth as an implant. Dr. Nandana has established skill sets to treat butchered cases no one else thinks can be saved. Her in-house outcome study shows that most of these cases do survive in health and function.

How long will root canal treatment take?

Most root canal appointments take at least 1-2 appointments to complete, however in some rare cases more appointments may be required. The amount of appointments required for your individual case will depend on how severe the infection is and how much swelling and inflammation it has caused. You can expect each treatment appointment to last about 1-1/2 hours.

What happens after root canal treatment?

Root canal treated teeth have to be immediately crowned to prevent fracture and subsequent extraction

Save your natural roots as the natural tooth is the best implant !!

After root canal treatment , you will be guided about the various options with advantages to restore and protect your treated tooth. Until the affected tooth is properly restored, you will want to avoid chewing on that side to prevent the tooth from fracturing. It is important to note that failure to continue your follow up care after a root canal can cause the root canal to fail and your tooth to be lost.

What about infection control?

Our priority is to provide the state-of-the-art dental care while maintaining strict operating protocol. We use autoclave sterilization and barrier techniques to prevent infectio.

Everything used in your mouth is either disposable, or it is run through a strict cleaning and autoclave regimen. We use disposables wherever possible. This absolutely prevents any cross-contamination First, they are manually scrubbed. Then they are cleaned in a chemical solution. Finally, they are sterilized in an autoclave. Larger surfaces are sprayed after each patient with a strong disinfectant then & wiped clean.

Those items that are not disposable are subjected to a rigorous sterilization routine in the state of the art technology of sterilisation.

Do I need root canal treatment even if my tooth doesn’t hurt?

Infection within your tooth may not always be accompanied by pain. However pain may be absent when the disease process in your tooth pulp goes into a chronic stage Your endodontist will read the high resolution xray image that is taken in the clinic and explain when and why a root canal may be needed.

The reason for needing a root canal is to remove the infection before it gets worse. Nevertheless, if the infection has reached your pulp or root canals, then root canal therapy must be performed to save the tooth.
