Why does it take so long for the dental treatment? My dentist completed my treatment so quickly! My dentist is an expert !!!
Have you heard that question?
Well……….
By large;
“Trifles make perfection but Perfection is no trifle”-Michelangelo
And Zooming in to dental treatment;
“Time is not the criteria; Excellence is the criteria”
In damaged teeth (decay or trauma)with little or no crown( tooth structure ); if dentists prefer to extract the root piece and place an implant or bridge, it may be relatively faster and have shorter office appointments .
But retreating that damaged destroyed tooth endodontically ( root canal treatment ); building it it up with a post and core restoration, and then doing a zirconia crown may seem like longer appointments and more sittings. And perhaps, in seeking perfection in all the above steps, may need an extra appointment sitting too.
That does not imply: Conservatively trying to save the root of a natural tooth is a waste of time. Application of knowledge and skills to save a patients natural tooth could never be a waste of time.
A Naural tooth has no expiry date while an implant does.
And all the above decision making process has nothing to do with clinical experience as much as it has to do with your ability to visualize a long term treatment plan.
It’s not a cherry pick treatment plan. Treatment plans have to always be customised for the patients health needs.
